Jim Reeves was a famous American pop male singer in the 1950s and 1960s whose warm magnetizing baritone voice was irresistible, and with soft orchestral accompaniment could always be heard or felt at the right time to reflect the right senses. Jim Reeves, known as Gentleman, is probably the biggest male star to emerge from Nasr. His sweet baritone voice with soft orchestral accompaniment still reverberates around the world.
Stripped down to a country western style and infused with a song-and-dance metropolitan vibe, Jim Reeves’ vocals were rough, tender, pure and intoxicating. His warm, magnet-like voice with a wonderful, rich nasal resonance, singing, I do not know how many people snuggled in his dreamy mood to dance together, intoxicated.
Reeves originally specialized in hard country songs (his 1953 hit “Mexican Joe” topped the charts), but it was his country-pop humming voice that made the greatest impression. He was a constant presence on the country and pop charts from 1955-1969, and Reeves’ death in a plane crash in 1964 was really bad timing. Not only was he a popular figure on the American charts, he was an early international ambassador for country music. It’s worth noting that his reputation in the UK and even in Europe was far greater than it was stateside. His fan base did not shrink at all after his passing. Several of his hits released after his death sold even more than his singles during his lifetime. In the three years since he was laid to rest, no fewer than six singles have reached the top of the charts. In fact, his unreleased “Take Me In Your Arms and Hold me” with Deborah Allen and “Have You Ever Been Lonely” with Patsy Cline, who also died in a plane crash in 1963, with electric backing, continued to be hits in the 1970s and 1980s. became a hit in the 1970s and 1980s. But his legacies, such as the particularly tasty 1957 country-pop single “Four Walls” and 1959′s “He’ll Have To Go,” are indicative of his own style and that of country music in general.
Jim Reeves was born and raised in Galloway, Texas, one of nine children in the family. Unfortunately, his father died when he was only 10 months old and his mother worked on a farm to support the family. at the age of 5 he was given a guitar and then heard a Jimmie Rodgers record from his brother. Since then he has been hooked on country music, with a special interest in Jimmie Rodgers, and at the age of 12 he was featured on a radio program in Shreveport, Louisiana. Although he was a music fan, he also had the talent of an athlete and nearly became a baseball player as a youth. After winning a physical fitness scholarship to the University of Texas, Reeves chose to study oratory and drama, but left school after only six weeks to work in the shipyards of Houston, and returned to baseball as a semi-professional for three years before joining the St. Louis Catholic choir in 1944 and having to give up his athletic career when he severely damaged his ankle.
In the years that followed, Reeves held several blue-collar jobs. During this time, he began to become an amateur singer. In addition to singing solo, he became the titular leader of the Moon Mullican Band.In 1949 Reeves recorded a few songs on a small, independent Macy Records label with little success. In the early 1950s Reeves decided to pursue a career in broadcasting, and immediately went to work for KSIG radio in Gladewater, Texas, before moving to Henderson’s LGRI radio station to pursue a career. During these years he worked as a record announcer and news broadcaster on KGRI, and in November 1952 moved to KWKH in Shreveport, where he became the host of the station’s popular Louisiana Hayride program. In late 1952 he was warmly accepted by his listeners after he sang once as a replacement for Hank Williams, who had been unable to appear on one of the columns of the program. Abbott Records immediately signed him to a recording contract, and the first song he recorded was “Mexican Joe”. The song quickly climbed to the top of the charts in the spring of 1953 and stayed there for nine weeks, followed by another hit, “Bimbo,” still in 1953. At the end of 1953, he became a regular performer on the Louisiana Hayride program. In 1954 and 1955 he recorded four more hits for Abbott and his parent company, Fabor Records. This string of successes shows that he was not a flash-in-the-pan musician.
