Born in 1941 in Gulangyu Island, Xiamen, Fujian Province, China, the “Hometown of Music”, he studied the piano at the age of seven and performed on stage at the age of nine. At the age of seven, he practiced the piano and performed on stage at the age of nine. At the age of twelve, he scored the highest marks and won the first prize among more than 2,000 candidates, and was admitted to the Central Conservatory of Music’s East China Branch Middle School (the predecessor of the present-day Shanghai Conservatory of Music), where he studied under the direction of Már Sís Sán. Two months after enrolling, he was selected by Soviet expert Sergey Lov for an expert class. From the mid-fifties to the early sixties, he studied in the expert class of the famous Soviet pianists Taturyan and Tatyana Petrovna Kravchenko (Professor of the Leningrad Conservatory, Russian People’s Artist). Later he went to the Leningrad Conservatory of Music (now the St. Petersburg Conservatory of Music), where he continued to study with the famous piano pedagogue Kravchenko, and at the same time studied composition and conducting. He graduated with honors from the Leningrad Conservatory and the Central Conservatory of Music. She was the principal pianist of the Central Orchestra. Now lives in New York, USA.
From 1959 to 1962, he won the Gold Medal at the 7th World Youth Jubilee Piano Competition in Vienna and the second prize at the 2nd Tchaikovsky Piano Competition, which were both highly acclaimed, and from then on he began his professional career. Since then, he has had very successful collaborations with world-renowned conductors such as Ormandy, Abbado, Sagint, Kondrashin, as well as the Philadelphia Symphony, Vienna Symphony, Moscow Symphony, St. Petersburg Symphony, and the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, etc. He has also made numerous trips to countries and regions such as Russia, the United Kingdom, Japan, North Korea, Finland, and Austria. In addition, he has made numerous solo tours throughout the United States and is frequently invited to participate in various music festivals and celebrations as a soloist. In 2002, he chaired the Jury of the 4th Tchaikovsky International Youth Music Competition in Xiamen, China, and in 2004, he was a member of the Jury of the 3rd China International Piano Competition. In 2004, he was a member of the jury of the Third China International Piano Competition. He has also been a professor and artist-in-residence at the Cleveland Institute of Music in the United States.
Since 1983, he has given three successful solo recitals at Carnegie Hall in the U.S.A., as well as concerts at Wigmore Hall in London, the Moscow Conservatory Hall, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Hall, and other world-renowned music halls. His passionate, colorful, lyrical and delicate style of playing and his skilled technique have left a deep impression on people. Over the years, he has created and adapted many Chinese piano masterpieces. In 1968, he created a piano-accompanied singing piece, “The Red Lanterns”, which was premiered in the same year. In 1970, as the creator, he collaborated with several musicians to create the piano concerto “Yellow River”, which was premiered in Beijing in the same year, in which he was the soloist, and then recorded (this version of the piano “Yellow River” was awarded the 1995 China Golden Record Award). The piano concerto “Yellow River” enjoys a high reputation in the international music world and has become a classic piece of Chinese music frequently performed by musicians from all over the world. His performance of “Yellow River” has been released on CD by the German label Seaman Records, and has been widely distributed. In 1995, he collaborated with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia to re-record the newest video piano concerto “Yellow River”. In addition, he has adapted a number of ancient Chinese compositions, such as “Night of the Pounding River” and “Ambush on All Sides”. He has devoted his whole life to exploring the nationalization of piano performance, and is regarded as a pioneer in the nationalization of piano performance, and an outstanding example of “using foreign music for Chinese purposes”.

In 1997, “Yin Chengzong and Piano Island”, a TV film published by Marco Polo Records in Hong Kong, was broadcasted throughout the United States and caused a sensation. During the celebration of Hong Kong’s handover in 1997, he participated in performances at Lincoln Center in New York, Dallas, San Francisco, Hong Kong, and in Jiangsu and Jiangxi in China, which were very well received. In addition, the China Central Television (CCTV) invited him to play the piano concerto “Yellow River” in Tiananmen Square, which was broadcasted to the world on July 1, with far-reaching effects.
In September 1997, he collaborated with the St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra of Russia to hold large-scale piano symphony concerts in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Shijiazhuang, Wuhan, Changsha, Xiamen and other cities.
In 2005, the 55th anniversary of Yin Chengzong’s career, he will tour major cities in North America and China, including Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and San Francisco, as well as Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Shenyang, Xiamen, and Fuzhou. He will also perform his masterpiece and premiere of the Yellow River Piano Concerto at the Beijing Palace of Ethnic Culture and at the Carnegie Hall in New York City, in September and October respectively, to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the composition. The concerto will commemorate the 35th anniversary of the composition of the piece.
He has been highly acclaimed for his artistic achievements in piano performance. Yin Chengzong is “China’s premier pianist,” “China’s most outstanding pianist,” and “a world-class virtuoso.” As one of the Four Great Musicians of China, his artistic profile has been published in the New Grove Dictionary of the English Garden.
